IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ

Apparently there has been some confusion in the media reporting me as a

Victorian resident. But no I'm from NSW.

Our home was & still is, in Rock Forest, N.S.W, as it has been for the last few

years & I'm very proud to be born & raised in N.S.W all my life.

However, yes, Mum & I were TEMPORARILY at a Victorian residence for a while

(April - Aug 2008) whilst we were there having to train & be closer to the

National Coach who was located in Bunyip, VIC.

But the whole time we were in VIC we still had our HOME in N.S.W & continued

to be residents of N.S.W not VIC.

Also, thank you to all those Victorian's I met who took me in as one of their own

whilst we were there even though I was from N.S.W. You'll never be forgotten :)

FINALLY WE'RE BACK IN AUSTRALIA & AT HOME IN N.S.W

Mum & I are very happy to be back in Australia & finally back at our home in Rock Forest, N.S.W. It's been at least 18mths since we've been at home properly & full-time so it's great to be back & know I'm here to stay & enjoy with no other trips planned for the near future.

It's been interesting trying to settle back into reality & having no travelling, training or competition planned for a while, but we are very much enjoying being home again.

We've long awaited this moment & its finally here.

I'm back in Australia!

Finally I'm back home in Rock Forest, NSW & back with all my horses again.

Therefore, if you would like to organise a visit to see the horse or pony you're interested in or even find a special one you might like when you

get here, please feel free to contact me to arrange a visit

as they're now available.

Selection Trials for Beijing ON TOMORROW

The date for my Para Dressage Selection Trials towards the Beijing Paralympic Games is on tomorrow. 11 March. We had the National Coach training us today which went well, & tomorrow is the competition day when I'll do my tests in a full competition scenario in front of the selectors, judges & national coach.

Last chance to impress the selectors, so here's hoping it all goes well :)

I'll put a write up & photos up after the selection trials are over & let you know how we went.

Selection Trials for Beijing Announced

I thought you might like a quick update on what's been happening lately with me & Nikshar Nomination (Nom).

A date for the Selection Trials for the Beijing Paralympic Games has been announced for the start of March 2008. Selectors, judges & the National Coach will be going around Australia to see each rider & horse combination up for selection. We'll be doing the tests for them in a competition scenario, however instead of all of the riders competing at one venue; it will be at multiple separate locations, due to the movement restrictions with the Equine Influenza outbreak.

Then hopefully at the end of March, all the selectors & team management will meet & view the videos that will be taken of each rider's performances, and then will choose those who will represent Australia in Beijing. So hopefully we'll make a good impression on the selectors, & all our hard work pays off.

I had the National coach come & watch me training on Nom in January & she was really happy with how we're going. It was great to hear.

I was also excited to hear that I've been nominated in a few sports awards lately & been made a finalist in each one.

I was one of six finalists in the "Elders Nicoll & Ireland Sportsperson of the Year Award" presented on Australia Day in Bathurst.

Plus I've also been nominated & chosen as a finalist in the 2007 Australian Sports Awards run by the Confederation of Australian Sport who governs all sports in Australia. The final winner of the awards won’t be announced till the end of February & I'm in the category of "Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability". It's a great honour to have been nominated for such a highly recognized award & even more exciting being chosen as one of the top 5 finalists. Just to be part of it is great to me.

Another award I've been given recently was being named The Horse Magazine’s “Eqvalan Rider of the Year” for 2007. I was featured in The Horse Magazine as the ‘Rider of the Month’ for October 2007. They then had readers vote for who they wanted as their ‘Rider of the Year’, out of all of the riders featured as the ‘Rider of the Month’ over 2007.

I was so excited when I was told it was me. To be chosen with so many other brilliant riders like Heath & Rozzie Ryan & other high profile Olympic contenders, it’s such an honour. I think I was the only rider with a disability.

The announcement of this is in the current February 2008 Issue of The Horse Magazine out now. The article was great! It’s such a cool thing for me & it's giving more coverage for Para Dressage & what we all do, so that's good for everyone.

I'll try to keep you up to date on all the latest news & things that are happening as they happen, but that's all for today's update. I hope everyone is keeping well.

N.K IN AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS AT BATHURST

I'm happy to say that I was part of the Australia Day celebrations held in Bathurst today at Peace Park. I was a finalist in the 'Elders Nicoll & Ireland Sportsperson of the Year Award' along with several other local sporting personalities.

It was a very tough field of finalists & I'm proud to have been nominated & then made a finalist (Top 6). There was plenty of tough competition with some very talented sportspeople, but unfortunately it was not meant to be for me this year with the award going to one of the other finalist's. But I'm honored to have been part of the event.

I want to thank everyone for their support, especially those who came to share the day with me. Hopefully next time I can bring the award home for everyone :)

PLEASE LISTEN TO EQUINE INFLUENZA WARNINGS

It's sad to say that the problems involved with the Equine Influenza outbreak are continuing. What's worse is that there are many who are ignoring the regulations being put forward & are putting not just themselves & their horses at risk, but the rest of us involved in the industry as well. This may seem bad now but believe me it can only get worse without everybody's full support. Some people are saying "It's not in our area so we don't & shouldn't have to worry about biosecurity & disinfecting measures & precautions".

Well, all I can say to those people is...

"It wasn't anywhere.. till it was somewhere..."

So play it safe. It's better to be safe & do all we can, then complain later that we didn't do enough. It will be detrimental to all horses & their human companions if this is not contained to the best of our ability. This is a horrible disease & highly contagious!

The following websites are the main few I have found to be the most informative to keep up to date on the EI situation as they're posting regular updates & information:

www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/agriculture/livestock/horse/influenza

www.horsecouncil.org.au

The Australian Horse Industry Council - Horse Emergency Contact Database is a great service & helps you receive direct updates as they come available. Plus it's a free service.

or, call the EI Hotline: 1800 675 888

WE'RE FINALLY FREE FROM EI LOCKDOWN

I'm happy to say we finally got permits to move our horses from SIEC - Sydney International Equestrian Centre. Most got out either yesterday or today (Mum, Nikshar Nomination & I today), however there are still some stuck at SIEC as they can't go to their homes with their horses, due to their areas being unaffected by EI so it's just a precaution even though the horses involved in the lockdown at SIEC thankfully have shown no signs or symptoms of Equine Influenza.

Mum & I are very grateful for all the help given to us whilst in lockdown. We're especially grateful to those people in lockdown with us, who so helped Mum & I whilst there, & did beyond what they needed to. And to the SIEC staff & community who were very caring, generous & helpful to us all that were stuck there.

I will be posting some photos from the lockdown at SIEC as soon as I get them on my computer. To show all that was done by those that were stuck & SIEC yet still kept going on to tend to their horses every need before their own. Including turning one large grass arena into 10 very useful yards to help house our horses thru the days.

2007 RDA NSW STATE DRESSAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS & EQUINE INFLUENZA OUTBREAK CAUSES INDEFINITE LOCKDOWN AT SIEC FOR THOSE AT CHAMPIONSHIPS

I'm happy to say Nikshar Nomination & I had a very successful event when competing at the 2007 RDA NSW State Dressage Championships held at S.I.E.C on the 25 & 26 August 2007. Unfortunately, instead of the comp being run over the 2 days as scheduled, all 3 tests were ridden on the 25th due to the event & S.I.E.C being forced into immediate lockdown due to an outbreak of Equine Influenza (EI) in the State & local areas. Thanks to the committee & very helpful judges who offered to stay well into the evening to allow riders to complete all their tests in the one day, the event was able to be completed, & championships awarded.

However as of today (28/8/2007) those that stayed with their horses here at SIEC, are still all in lockdown & are here indefinitely as the outbreak is growing & spreading further. All horse transport has been ceased within & between states with high fines, inc. jail time given to those who are caught not abiding by the national shut down of the horse industry. We will not get any further input till at least next Monday (3/9/07). Things are not looking good! Thankfully so far; none of the horses in lockdown here within SIEC have shown any symptoms for EI, which is very promising.

Results from the 2007 RDA NSW State Dressage Championships

for Nikshar Nomination & I were:

Grade 1b Section A - FEI PE Gr1b Team Test 67.941% - 1st

Grade 1b Section A - FEI PE Gr1b Individual Championship Test 65.714% - 1st

Grade 1b Section A - FEI PE Gr1b Freestyle to Music Test 73.333% - 1st

NSW Dressage Champion for Grade 1b - Section A

Overall NSW Dressage Champion for Grade 1b

Below is a media release from RDANSW that has been put out since the outbreak.

 MEDIA RELEASE - FROM RDANSW

Since the ban of horse movements has been imposed to all NSW horses, 13 horses belonging to RDANSW Dressage competitors have been locked down at Sydney International Equestrian Centre (SIEC), Horsley Park.

All horses belong to competitors that competed in the Championships at the centre last week.

All the horses are well and have shown no signs of illness. The staff at SIEC have been absolutely fantastic and are working with authorities to help ensure that the horses stay free of any signs of illness.

The horses will remain at the centre until the horse movement ban is lifted.

We were nicely surprised when we woke up in the morning to find a beautiful little colt standing with his mother.

I will definitely be posting photos & information about the colt very soon

He has already shown to us his beautiful nature & loves to run around & make his mother run after him.

Already at only 2 days old, he is used to my electric wheelchair, even staying laying down as I drive it right up to him & he absolutely LOVES his scratches from head to toe.

This little guy will definitely be seen on the show circuit as he gets older

Nicole Kullen (Nikshar Stud) are proud to present several beautiful horses & ** FOR SALE ** - "NIKSHAR WILDFIRE" 5yo Purebred Arabian Geldingponies for sale. After such great results at my competitions in Belgium & Melbourne this year I felt I needed to introduce you to someone that has played a role in getting me there

Kathy Shelley - PENROBAN

NCAS Level 2 Dressage Specialist

Specializing in improving the seat and position of the rider

to bring out the best potential in the horse.

"Kathy has been my Coach for a few very successful years now, and I have never come across anyone more dedicated to the sport or to her students. She's not only a very skilled rider herself, but she has a great way of sharing her skill and knowledge with her students, to get the best results possible. I'm very glad to have had the opportunity to meet & work with Kathy & Graeme over these past few years, & I look forward to continuing this partnership thru out the future. Kathy has been a huge help to get me to the International Level rider that I am today. We've shared many great successes together along my dressage career, including when I became the '2005 RDAA National Dressage Champion' (Gr2A) & was also later awarded the '2005 EFA NSW RDA Rider of the Year Award'. FUNDRAISER  SUCCESS  REPORT

On Tuesday 12 September 2006, four Rotary Clubs from Bathurst joined forces to hold a Combined Rotary Clubs International Night.

The night was run as a fundraiser event to help support me towards my (Nicole's) trip to Belgium.

The four Rotary Clubs that held the night were:

  Rotary Bathurst    Rotary Bathurst East

Rotary Bathurst Daybreak    Rotary Bathurst Macquarie

I am so very grateful for all involved in organizing the event.

The night went really well.

There was plenty of entertainment including talented dancers and musicians, an eventful auction and the drawing of the raffle.

We were also honored with the presence of the local Deputy Mayor as well other well known members of the community.

I also want to thank all those who attend the night to help support me. It really made me feel very welcomed by the community!

On the night I was also given a very precious gift from a local gentleman who attended the evening.

He came over & introduced himself to me, & after talking for a short moment, he then showed me this beautiful necklace he had handcrafted himself.   It was a necklace he'd made in the ways of his tribal heritage.

It was one of the most gorgeous necklaces I've seen. He told me he wanted me to have it. I asked him to put it on for me straight away.

Then I wore it very proudly for the rest of the night.

I'll try to get some photos to put up from the night after I get back from Belgium & Melbourne.

Well I better leave it at that for now.

Thank you so much again to all those that worked so hard to put on the night and to all those who came to support me.

& Brampton Country Rose (Rosie) on attending the NSW All Breeds Foal Show held at Hawkesbury Showground on the 30 July 2006

This was Nikshar Valentino's first show

Valli behaved himself very well & was awarded 3rd in his Purebred Arabian Best Trot class, as well as 5th in his Purebred Arabian Colt class.

Nicole Kullen

'2005 EFA NSW RDA Rider of the Year'

NEEDS YOUR HELP

Nicole is an experienced rider who is the current

RDAA NATIONAL DRESSAGE CHAMPION

for her classification

Nicole is in urgent need for special horse to buy, lease or borrow to train and compete

regularly in EFA, RDA & Para Equestrian Competitions

In 1996 Nicole contracted Menningacoccal Meningitis Septicemia Nicole had both lower legs amputated & was left with limited arm movement with no function in both hands & wrists. Due to her special needs Nicole's in desperate need of a suitable dressage mount

Nicole is seeking:

A well balanced horse light to ride with 3 good paces

A good temperament at home and competitions

Trained to Elementary and above, and not under 15hh

Age preferably 7 - 10 yrs old for horses to purchase, however if its a horse to lease or ride then age is not important

Nicole is a member of the RDAA National Dressage Squad & has been selected to represent Australia at the International Para Equestrian competition in Belgium in Sept. - Oct. 2006.

Nicole also needs to attend the 2006 RDAA National Dressage Championships in Werribee, Victoria in October 2006. Nicole needs to attend these Championships to maintain her squad criteria as well as to work towards selection for the Para Equestrian World Championships in Britain in 2007, and then the 2008 Beijing Paralympics

At present, although Nicole will be entering the Nationals

she still has no horse to ride there so we hope to find one very soon

Nicole is also looking for any sponsors & supporters to help her towards getting to Belgium, as well as to help towards all her training & competition expenses

Para Equestrian Squad Clinic

On Friday 28 July 2006 there was a clinic held with the RDAA/APC National Dressage

Coach for NSW members of the National & PPP Dressage Squads. There were 4

riders that attended (including myself). This was our last chance to see the National

Coach & our Chef de Equip before heading overseas for International Para Equestrian

competitions, that are also Paralympic Qualifier events for the 2008 Beijing Paralympics.

For others, this was the last chance to see them before heading to the RDAA National

Dressage Championships held in Werribee, Victoria in October 2006.

The day went well & was very informative for all involved. N.K

Nikshar NaSala (Nessa)

Nessa attended the AWHA Gala Day Show held at the Sydney International Equestrian

Complex on 11 June 2006. Nessa competed in her foal class & placed 2nd out of three.

Nessa behaved remarkably well for her first time at SIEC & in the Indoor Arena.

Especially considering the weather was very cold & raining, & this was only her second

show. The other foals in her class had full warmblood breeding, which made her look

very tiny against the winner as she's an Arabian Warmblood, but she held herself very

well & came out with a red ribbon. I'm very proud of her!

Light Nefarious diagnosed with terminal cancer

Nicole Kullen riding Light Nefarious in an EFA Dressage Competition

'Light Nefarious' (Stormy), my 8 year old Thoroughbred gelding has been diagnosed with terminal cancer in the throat and will have to be put down soon as the illness worsens.

Stormy and I have had a great 2 year partnership, which included winning the

2005 RDAA National Dressage Championships for my classification

Unfortunately, riding Stormy to win the National Dressage Championship for my grade, was the last time I ever got to ride him.

Unfortunately, his condition has no treatment and would cause a lot of discomfort if he was left to pass naturally.

It breaks my heart knowing I will lose him soon, but he'll definitely be remembered for helping me fulfill some of my goals, and for being a good friend, although very cheeky, from the start to the very end.

I also want to say thank you to Baxter Healthcare for being a great supporter of me and my riding ambitions and for helping me purchase Light Nefarious in 2004.. Unfortunately I'm now desperately looking for a new horse to continue my dressage career as well as to meet my squad requirements as a member of the RDAA National Dressage Squad.   N.K
